Thanksgiving

Thursday, November 25, 2010

There are just some things that you don't ever want to forget.  There are somethings about Thanksgiving that are so traditional that their not even worth mentioning.  Grandma was in charge of bringing the plates.  We gave her a hard time because she brought these cafateria style divided plates.  The table decorations this year were fun and a huge hit ~ they were filled with candy.  I was incharge of dessert with Becky and ended up bringing french apple pie from Marie Calendars and Cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory.  I never want to be asigned dessert again.  It was so stressful and choked, purchasing our dessert...  The one thing I missed was not mentioning what we were thankful for.  Without going around the table and everyone saying something quick and Grandpa Thomson giving his way too long prayer, it just seemed like any other dinner, not quite Thanksgiving.

Unlocking the Silent Prison

Monday, November 22, 2010

I found this article in Sunday's paper about caregivers learning a better way to communicate with Alzheimer's patients.  'We tend to treat people with dementia as though they're not the persons they were.  But they're still here.'

The article gave the example of a daughter visiting her mother and telling her, "You're not my daughter."  The next week the daughter had gotten some help.  She said, "Mom, I have a gift for you" and gave her two photos.  Under one she'd written, "This is my daughter Sara at age three"; under the other picture was "This is my daughter Sara now."  Her mother studied the photos, then looked at her daughter and said, "As beautiful as ever."

There were some other great tips in the article that was part of the Parade section, I can bring it to the next family council.  But Mom suggested putting photo's together in his treasure box, that would go with him as he visits us.  I think we should work on a book (maybe seperate family books) with a picture of us as children, teenagers, and adults then add our spouses (maybe a wedding pict and now photo) and children (10 - 12 years ago and a current picture).

We all need to keep an eye out for the air mattress we talked about purchasing for Christmas

Fun at the Scout Auction

Saturday, November 20, 2010

Although these aren't the only prizes we came home with, these are the only ones I can show you.  We got a few things for the kids for Christmas and I won a few items that Dan deams wedding gift rejects; our major win for the night was a 1/4 side of beef!  Can you say Moo?

Reading with 1st Graders

Friday, November 19, 2010

He usually entertains himself with the block/bricks that stick together with endless possibilities. He makes many star wars characters and their light sabers. Today he borrowed a book and was "reading" it. When I was in between listening to Chloe's classmates read I asked him how he was doing. He showed me what he had been working on:

I think he is a genius!!!
{Just remember back to when we thought he would be a mute!}

Update on Seth's Jeans

I have always gotten most of Seth and Chloe's clothes from Kyle and Madison. It is very rare to get a pair of jeans from Mr. Kyle that doesn't have atleast one hole in them. At first I was like I don't want to pay $1 for holy jeans. Then I got talked into them and love seeing them on Seth. I did finish patching the entire stack, but in doing laundry, I found more...

Finished, just in time to pack it away!

Thursday, November 18, 2010

I just got back from Make and Take at Wendy's finishing a tall Thankful craft. Chloe's still working on her cornucopia, but mine is done. It seems like such a waste since Dan has already brought up all of our Christmas decoration bins and I have already got everything in place...

It was just a couple of inches

Tuesday, November 16, 2010

It's a love/hate type of situation at our house right now. I both love and hate it when I can't sleep at night. It is Tuesday and since I don't have to take Chloe to school in the morning, I can just get her out the door functioning on fewer than normally needed brain cells. You should see us rushing around each morning slapping her hair into pony tails, fumbling with her lunch box and her bottle of ice water, with just enough brain cells to spare to gather and organize her folder full of homework and forms.

I was lucky enough to get a free desk from Laura and Meridian Title when they were redecorating. I was even luckier to have my brother-in-law Russ and nephew Zack come and help get it into the house, up the stairs, through a too small hallway and into my office and then they put it together!!! For the past two years I have enjoyed my fabulous office. It is the place where everything ends up. If I've left something in the kitchen too long and Dan doesn't think it belongs there, He'll put it in my office! Any time the kids are cleaning their own bedrooms and don't know where something goes, it gets put in my office! I hate to admit it but it is clean and usable for scrapbooking and crafting probably only 50% of the time...

The desk is great but it is three inches away from the wall. Or I should say it was three inches away from the wall! I had to take everything out of the two large legal sized drawers and remove everything from the top of my desk, including my computer. I snapped the picture above so that I could put my computer back together without any questions or guesses! So now everything is clean and I no longer loose pens and pencils or anything and everything else that would fall behind my desk, I am ready to scrapbook and hope with the upcoming time off of school, we will be able to finish some fun crafts!

Shamed by Seth's knee's

Monday, November 15, 2010

At our family council my sisters teased Seth about the massive holes
in his jeans at the knee. It might have been OK if he had put them there himself,
but he proudly wears his holy jeans that he got from his cousin Kyle.
I went and bought about 1/3 yard of heavy corduroy
to patch up the holes like these jeans had been done:
This was the stack I had to begin with and this was before I realized
and learned how hard it was to sew up into a little boys pant leg!

Kitchen Help

Saturday, November 13, 2010

You might not believe it, slave driver that I am, but this is the first time I have allowed Chloe to use a vegetable peeler.  I showed her the safe and proper way to peel carrots and then she tried potatoes.
This morning she liked peeling carrots better than potatoes, they were too round and hard to peel!
Aren't they beautiful?  You might not believe me, but a peeled and sliced carrot is so, so, so much better than those processed baby carrots you find in the grocery stores everywhere!

All of the vegetable peeling was in preparation for tonight's A.S.S. Meeting.  This will be the first of many Alzheimer's Support System meetings and even though it was Tommy's idea, I am very nervous.  I'm afraid that someone will take a suggestion, question or comment the wrong way.  We had dinner and then sat down opening the meeting with a prayer.  Wendy had just finished with the world wide leadership meeting at her stake center and very adamantly asked if we could change our name to Family Council, not very funny and light hearted but much easier to explain to children who ask, "Mom, where are you and Dad going?"  We were able to talk and listen as a group with out children interrupting and plan on meeting again in three months to review and update.   When Tommy came to me and asked him to help get everything prepared for such a gathering, I felt the mantle of our families priesthood power shift from Dad to Brother.  Tonight, Erin said that she knows that Dad has been waiting for this to happen.  We will all make a stronger effort to help care for Dad and make sure we are there for Mom and her needs.  It is such a comfort to have a plan, to stay close to family and to know that It Is Forever!

After we had spent some time in the car this morning, Seth found this fish hook in my cup holder.  Dan had very irresponsibly left this hook for me to get snagged on {again}!  I let Seth tease me for a little while, "Don't you hook me!"  and then rigged it up on my rear view mirror with it's own gummy worm!  We got stuck waiting for a train or front runner, but we were stopped for no reason, nothing ever passed in front of us, no cars were counted, no whistles blown...
Chloe wanted to ask Santa for these snow shoe kits for her and Seth.  She thought they would be so much fun up at Bear Lake!  Because of the screw up two Christmases ago, she now likes to send a picture of exactly what she wants to Santa Claus.  I'm not sure if these will make the final cut, she only gets to ask for one thing from Mr. Claus...

Parent Teacher Conferences

Tuesday, November 9, 2010

Chloe became very insistent that she come with me to my appointment with her teacher tonight.  She said that her teacher was very excited to see all of her students with their parents.  I thought this was a chance for the adults to talk but at the last minute gave in and let her come.  I have been a little worried about the simpleness of the reading material coming home with the Chlo-myster.  Very babyish books that she just breezes through.  Tonight her teacher informed me that after assessing the classroom she was able to test those children on a higher reading level and Chloe is currently reading like a second grader in her third month of the school year.  Her teacher will be going over the librarians head and Chloe will be able to check out chapter books and those others on her skill level.  She will be working on addition and memorizing math equations up to the number twelve.  She also said that my little girls handwriting is exceptional for a left handed writer and is always improving.

We will continue reading our Romona books together.  I have a few Junie B Jones books and will start gathering the magic tree house books.  Any other suggestions that your kids love?

I have always been a book and math nerd growing up.  I want my children to be smart.  I worry that Chloe will be bored in school but hope that this advantage will give her the help she needs in every subject ~ especially boys!

Can you believe this rain and snow. It was coming down all day. It didn't stop or come to a light drizzle all day, I know, I was out in it, all day!!! We started by taking Chloe to school with our bud Ty. We have a new carpool {and that's all we can say about that}. We went to hobby lobby and then ran home to get our camera and Chloe's library book ~ we forgot to bring it this morning... Then back to school for the second time to take pictures of the 1st graders in the library for our scrap school project. Chloe was so excited to show Seth her library and which books he could read. As soon as she got her book checked out she found a nice quiet place and started reading to him!

This was the shot I was looking for:
I was able to get most of the kids' picture, searching the library shelves!
This week is early out, all week long. I'm not a wuss or week but I do appreciate the moment when Dan gets home from work and the kids attack him with all of their love and energy. This week that has to wait 2 hours each and every day... So we searched our greatest and latest Family Fun magazine and decided on the fun felt cornucopia craft. You can get the patterns here!

It is called Thanksgiving stuffing and after Seth and I found all of the right colors after stopping everywhere {hobby lobby, hancock fabrics, michaels, joannes, and walmart} we were set to go!
She didn't think she could do it, but I reminded her that she has already been stitching with embroidery floss on her scrapbook pages. It was much easier for her to cut one layer of felt at a time and she laughed way too hard when we divided the floss into strands of 3... But she very carefully did her best!
We tried, but Seth had to be part of the fun {he is so like his Uncle Tom}
We got everything cut out and I only had to assist her on the smallest of pieces.
She was ready to go and didn't want to stop for either dinner or bedtime!
We will post a picture of our completed projects a soon as they are done.
P.S. she thought Aunt Wendy would really like this project because she is so crafty!!!

In the Classroom

Friday, November 5, 2010

It might be shallow of me, but I love being loved. When I go into Chloe's classroom to help, it's all "Hi, Chloe's Mom" or "Hi, Miss Liz!" This is the first time that I have had to bring Seth into school this year. He has had so much fun playing at Dezi's. I hope he will still want to because he found the fun toys to play with and didn't want to leave even after we stayed an hour longer than planned!

I know that it is hunting season and I have appreciated those posts from my sisters about their kids or hubby's kills. I felt it necessary to mention that if worst came to worst Dan and Guy could add a little variety to our menu!
Obviously it was too much trouble for Dan to pass the camera and ask Guy to take a picture of his catch with his cheesy grin in the actual shot. This is why I go fishing people!!!

Seth's Artwork

I am so lucky to have such wonderful sister-in-laws.  Today while I gave Mom a little time to herself and sat with Dad, Seth stayed at Auntie Kates.  She had pre-school this morning and Seth got to learn a little about the letter B.  He was so excited to go and told be that they have the greatest Star Wars Lego's ever!!!

The funny things they say!

I have forgotten to take my camera with me for the past few weeks.  I headed off to Mom and Dad's to be with Dad and let Mom have the day to herself and realized I don't have it with me, again.  I wanted to take a self portrait of me and Dad...  Next time.

A few nights ago, Dan announced that he was going to get rid of the squeak in the floor board in our family room.  We have lived with this for over three years now and I was a little surprised.  He asked me to take everything off of my book shelves and the entertainment center before he got home from work.  He and Chloe just found 25 pages of cheats and hints for their fishing game on the Wii and were catching some really big fish with each others help.  It had been a while since anyone had played this game and Dan kept asking Chloe how he was supposed to switch from his tackle box and his many types of bait.  She kept answering him, "Push the B button Dad, Can't you read?"  She is getting to be such a good little reader, she is full of herself!  She came home from school on Monday with 100% on her first spelling pre-test.  The words are assigned to them and if they spell them all correctly they get extra challenge words for the week ~ what kind of backwards prize is this?  She loves it anyways!!!  After they stopped playing games for dinner, he got busy getting rid of the squeaks by drilling screws into the floor, after pulling up the carpet.  Both kids were freaking out that he was ruining our house!

Dan and I have been slogging through head colds.  There is an annoying tickle that just sticks in the back of your throat and is very persistent at night.  Last weekend, he thought he felt just fine and was going to go out early, Saturday morning to try to call in some coyotes and get some target practice under his belt.  He had invited brothers and neighbors but no one could make it.  He resolved to bring Seth.  They were gathering warm clothing and boasting about their soon to be kills when he came in and informed me, the mother!  I very nervously made him vow to bring my baby home in one piece without any extra holes!!!  Seth came in to tell me he was going to take his gun hunting {the one he got from Grandpa Thomson} and he was going to kill some bunnies.  I said to him that if he goes with Dad, he wont be a baby anymore, he'd be a man and there would be no more snuggling with mommy.  He quickly changed his mind and refused both Dan and my own attempts to get him to go.  I was very excited for him to go with Dan, me and Chloe could have some girl time of our own.  Fortunately, Dan took a sleep aid that night and got some sleep but still didn't feel well enough to go, with or with out Seth; my boy who is not quite ready to be a man!!!

Happy Birthday Uncle Josh

Tuesday, November 2, 2010

I found this costume last year after halloween on clearance.  This year I have been looking for an iron man costume for Seth to dress up in, in a size 6-7.  Dan took a picture with his phone of Chloe in the woopie cushion the day we dug the halloween boxes out of the basement.  Grandma asked if she could borrow the costume for Uncle Jelly Bean and I really don't think we'll ever get it back ~ he loved it almost as much as he loves bathroom humor of all types and sorts!!!
