Splake ~ That's Right ~ SPLAKE!

Sunday, October 4, 2009

At fish lake, and every other lake, Dan is a catch and release kind of guy. He makes sure they swim away and live to be caught another day. On Saturday morning, Dan and Bry went out early again and were hooking 'em in left and right {I still haven't seen any pictures to prove it...} but when Dan came stomping in our little rented cabin with a real life fish, I was shocked. He showed the kids the fish he kept and explained that this one died before he could let it swim away. They were troubled, to say the least.

"Why did he die?"

"What will we do with him?"

"What should we name him?"

We decided to name him dinner. On the drive home I was telling him who would enjoy eating this poor fish. My friend Cindy gets a real kick out of the fact that he bought a boat, spends hours fishing and doesn't bring any trophies home to eat! His sister Kate has also mentioned that she would love any of our spoils. He then tells me that he thinks it would be good for the children to learn that we eat what we kill and then he threw in that they might actually like it!
So today, after enjoying conference, Dan found a recipe on-line that sounded good to him and he prepared and baked this splake fish with the best french fries {like they make them at 5Guys}.
I baked up some biscuits and some chicken nuggets for the kids and I would proudly like to whisper that the fish didn't taste like fish. It didn't taste like anything but the spices and bacon that were part of the recipe. And in a very, very quiet whisper ~ It was kind of good!
